Optimizing Energy by Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology has become one of the popular topics studied by many researchers and scientists. By January 2015, researchers have discovered that nanomaterials have been one of the alternative ways to generate and boost the production of renewable energy. They also have discovered a new class of low cost material based on to become a catalyst in various process of energy production. Latest research also have paid an attention on how nanotechnology can build a durable yet cheap material for power plants around the world. These progressive inventions on nanotechnology are enabled by the fact that our world in 2050 will need to double its energy production in order to maintain the human’s life. Through this urgent reasons, nanomaterials have three advantageous ways and methods to optimize our energy demands.

One of the methods that can be easily used is by using materials based on nanotechnology to provide efficient energy storage. There are numerous examples on how nanomaterials can enhance the efficiency of the energy storage and one of them is batteries. Fortunately, researchers have gained an access to improve the ordinary lithium ion powered batteries which are found frequently on mobile electrical appliances by changing its electrode structure. Scientific results show that nanostructured electrodes have the ability to conserve the charge of energy better and have more flexibility compared to the old electrode bars.

Another alternative way would be by using nanotechnology to improve the process of the energy production itself. The optimization on energy production by using nanomaterials have been implemented on hydrogen powered fuel cells, wind power plants and PVs ¬- a device which converts solar energy to electrical energy by utilizing the photovoltaic effect. On hydrogen powered fuel cells, nanomaterials have shown a good performance of being a catalyst to speed up the reactions occurred. Rather than being a catalyst, nanomaterial on power plants and PVs are used to enhance their structure to become lighter yet stronger and more durable than before.

The outstanding materials derived from nanotechnology can also be used for enhancement of energy distribution around the world. Recent studies have shown a progress on optimization of wireless power transmissions that can be seen today on wireless charging used by recent smart phones. Researchers stated that future wireless power transmission can be transmitted by lasers, micro-waves or electromagnetic resonance by optimizing the components into a nano scale. In addition, high voltage transmission system had applied the nano filter for electrical isolation system and soft magnetic materials to achieve efficient current transmission.

In the end, nanotechnology have shown a quite good progress since it was first discovered on 1981. Yet, nanotechnology has given us access to maximize efficiency of energy by using nanomaterial as energy storage, improvement quality of energy production or even as the efficient energy distributor. Even though, the predictions stated by experts that the energy demands in the future will be overwhelmed are inevitable. Will nanotechnology be the answer to our future problems? Furthermore, are we going to survive from our own energy demands?
